Agucadoura Generating Power for 1,500 Homes

Agucadoura Generator As the conventional sources of energy are dwindling, scientists are continuously looking for alternative sources of energy. We are frequently reading about generation of alternative and clean energy from unconventional sources. Portugal built Agucadoura, the world’s first wave farm off its coast. This wave farm has three Wave Energy Converters which are producing a total of 2.25MW. (more…)

Collisions with deer and other animals spike in November; fatal crashes up 50% since 2000

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

ARLINGTON, VA — November is the peak month for vehicle-deer collisions, and a new analysis of insurance claims and federal crash data indicate the problem is growing. The Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), an affiliate of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), recently examined insurance claims for animal strikes under comprehensive coverage month by month from January 2005 through April 2008. The main finding is that insurance claims for animal collisions are nearly 3 times higher during November than the typical month earlier in the year. For example, for every 1,000 insured vehicles 14 claims were filed in November 2007 compared with an average of 5 claims per 1,000 during January-September. Insurance claims usually don’t specify the animal involved, but other data show that deer are the main ones.

bmw m1 hommage_03.jpg

BMW debuted their M1 Hommage Concept at the Concorso
d’Eleganza at Villa d’Este earlier this year to celebrate the 13th
birthday of the legendry M1.  This sleek
mid-engine sports car had obvious styling cues from the original M1, with a
modern touch of flare.Rumors have
surfaced that BMW is now working on a production model based on the M1 Hommage,
and the most exciting portion of those rumors are around the drivetrain.

Supposedly, the next generation M1 (which is
not yet officially named) will feature a direct injection, twin turbocharged
3.0 liter inline six cylinder engine, and while the power output has not been
announced, there is a possibility that it will be equipped with the
EfficientDynamics system.  This will
allow the high performance engine to offer similar emissions and economy as
BMWs mid-level 5-series sedans, but we can expect the ‘new M1′ to offer vastly
more power.  This will be achieved by
features such as brake regeneration and start-stop technology, and for that
added Supercar touch,  the kinetic energy
recovery system from the company’s F1 team.

The original M1 quickly secured its presence in the
automotive record books, and if BMW can offer a green Supercar with this new
edition, whether it carries the M1 name or not, it will surely be an instant
legend.

Every Color Of The Rainbow Is An Energy Source

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Rainbow Energy We have all enjoyed watching rainbows and at some point wanted to travel to the end of them for those fabled pots of gold. We can make out the distinct seven colors of the rainbows. But what we see as colors are actually different frequencies or energy levels of the sunlight. A solar panel converts some portion of sun light into energy for our use. (more…)
