The current Maxima, the flagship of the Nissan line, were introduced in 1995. Nissan designed the Maxima model line so it covers a broad “price walk,” meaning buyers seeking luxury, performance, or simply a well-engineered, roomy sedan would be able to find a car that suits their tastes and budget.

For 1997 the Maxima gets an interior and exterior face-lift. The Maxima is Nissan’s third-best seller. Its buyers are overwhelmingly male and tend to be in their mid-50s.

The 1997 Nissan Maxima is available in three models: GXE, SE and GLE. Safety features include dual airbags, child safety locks, side-impact protection and an optional anti-lock brake system (ABS).

A 3.0-liter 24-valve V6 engine powers the Maxima, producing 190 horsepower. Standard equipment on all models includes air conditioning, power windows and door locks, a tilt steering wheel, cruise control, and a rear window defroster.

The sporty SE adds a rear spoiler, sport-tuned suspension, a body-color grille and black-on-white analog gauges. The GLE goes the luxury route, bolstering the GXE with an automatic transmission, power front seats, leather upholstery, wood trim, automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, and a premium Bose stereo system.
